TEN DAYS THAT UNEXPECTEDLY CHANGED AMERICA: "ANTIETAM" - “What did the battle of Antietam indicate about warfare during the Civil War and what was the significance of this battle?”

  1. Antietam was a great display of just how gruesome the Civil War was. It indicated that the Confederacy had a great chance of actually winning the war, but the Union was able to stop them in their tracks. The significance of the war was that the Union was able to finally get a decent enough victory, though tie, for President Lincoln to deliver the Emancipation Proclamation. In doing so, it also stopped Great Britain and France from siding with the Confederacy, which could have won them the war.

  2. First, it was the bloodiest day of the American Civil war. This was because of the clashing of modern technologies (rifling bullets, new loading techniques, gatling guns etc) with the archaic style of war of attrition. Though this was the single bloodiest battle in the war, it is also a microcosm of the war at large, because this was happening in most battles, if on a smaller scale. (Also interesting is the battlefield photography: this is the first American war after the invention of photography, and brought war to the people in a way they've never seen before.)

  3. The Battle of Antietam indicated that the Civil War would be fought through war of attrition. There was no clear objective- only men waiting in line to be slaughtered. There was no decisive winner. McClellan did not even attempt to capture Lee's army after the battle. Basically, it was symbolic of the war as a whole.

  4. The battle of Antietam indicated that this was essentially a war of attrition. More and more men were being sent in, which would ultimately lead to a large amount of casualties. The significance of this battle was that despite the total loss of 23,000 men, neither side was able to claim victory. This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Also, for the first time, Americans saw real pictures from this battle. Before, they could only imagine every so often what the soldiers went through and then they returned to their daily lives. The photographs that were taken made a large impact on Americans.

  5. The battle of Antietam indicated the idea of fighting with your brethren until the very end. One of the narrators mentioned that nobody would want to leave the battlefield because it would shame his father, or brother. The significance of the battle was the fact if the Union lost the battle, the capital would have been surrounded by the Confederacy. Since the Union won, it ended General Lee's invasion of the North, and allowed President Lincoln to address the Emancipation Proclamation. He could not produce such talk without some sort of victory, considering the Union was on a losing streak. This win determined freedom for slaves in the south.

  6. This battle indicated that the Confederates were a reasonable force that the Union needed to take seriously. The North needed to rally their citizens in order to oppose the South. This battle showed that the weapons at the time were more advanced than the tactics. The tactics were established with short range muskets that were hardly accurate across a class room now rifles could fire much farther and more accurately. Cannons had developed as well with various types of rounds available. The fighting developed into War of Attrition. Generals launched as many bodies at each other as they could until one side retreated. This battle also denied foreign intervention in the war and allowed the war to be isolated within the United States.

  7. The Battle of Antietam indicated that warfare during the Civil War was very brutal and harsh. This was the bloodiest day in the war and by the close of the battle, nearly 23,000 soldiers were dead or wounded. Antietam was significant because it repelled the first Confederate invasion of the North, which if the Union lost this battle, the whole entire war would have been shifted. The North needed a victory both morally and strategically, for if they would have lost, than it would have allowed for the the war to spread onto Union soil and weaken the Union morale all together. This battle allowed Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and due to the Union battle victory and issuing of the Proclamation, it kept Britain out of the picture in joining the Confederates in the Civil War.

  8. Antietam indicated that more modern tactics needed to be employed in order to limit the massive loss of life as seen in the battles of antietam. War of attrition no longer made sense considering the more modernized weaponry. It also showed the intense alliance shared between union and their fellow soldiers and confederate forces and their fellow soldiers due to their brotherhood whether literal or metaphorical.

  9. The Battle of Antietam indicated how deadly modern weaponry served against old style warfare. The battle also indicated that strategy/style of war needed to change to accommodate the new weaponry. The significance of Antietam is that is stopped General Lee from attacking in the North and sent him retreating, it gave Lincoln the victory he needed to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, and also gave Lincoln cause to remove General McClellan from command of the Potomac army.

  10. The Battle of Antietam importantly indicated several things about warfare during the Civil War, things that had the capacity to change the turnout of the war. One of the most important things is that Antietam kept France and England on the sidelines, and kept them from interfering. The next key fact about the warfare in the Civil War was without the Battle of Antietam, the Emancipation Proclamation may have not been as effective, or had the same result. The significance of this battle is that without it, the South very well could have won the Civil War.

  11. With advancements in weapons, warfare was dramatically changed. New rifles compared to the older rifles were much more accurate and deadly. Old rifles could shoot about a mile but were only effective within 150 feet, as compared to the new rifles which could shoot much farther and were effective up to about a half mile. The reason that this was so deadly was because of the unchanged strategy of warfare at the time. Soldiers would march in lines, closer and closer to enemy lines, and would quickly be picked off. The larger the group of men, the larger the target was. This made killing much easier and turned war into how many men would keep coming to be killed until someone ran out of men. At this time specifically, it was significant that the Union had finally gotten a win. With this win they were able to keep confederates away from taking Maryland and were able to release the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves. Along with these improvements, the Union removed General George McClellan because of his lack of productivity and following direct orders.

  12. The Battle of Antietam, the first battle on Union soil, indicated a great deal of the kind of warfare that took place during Civil War. The warfare at Antietam was dismantled and unorganized, resulting in a staggering death toll and what is considered to be the bloodiest battle in American history. It seemed the confederates had the advantage in terms of numbers. The result of win was unclear, but this battle and the Union’s efforts did give Lincoln the confidence to continue with his Emancipation Proclamation.

  13. The battle of Antietam indicated the severity of war of attrition; war was simply a race of who could die with nobility. It also showed that they needed modern weaponry to accommodate this old style of warfare. Its significance is how it directed Lincoln into installing the Emancipation Proclamation.

  14. The Battle of Antietam was extremely significant as it resulted in the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Additionally, it was the most brutal battle of the war, having a combined 22,717 deaths, casualties, and missing soldiers. The type of warfare used in the battle was "war of attrition".

  15. The North fought in a very noble fashion for the purpose of saving the Union, because of this drive and determination, we see the North stepping up extensively- from inventing new tactics on the battlefield in an effort to win to the complete destruction of the South. The goal for the North was to cripple the South so much that independently, they would not be able to fight against the North. With a(n almost victory) for the north, Antietam gave Lincoln the opportunity to set the Emancipation Proclamation. Also, it showed the gruesome truth to war, the pictures bringing more attention to the previously thought "adventure" or leisure that many people thought war was.

  16. The battle of Antietam indicated that the warfare of attrition was extremely detrimental seeing that it was one of the most horrifying battles of the Civil War. It symbolized how deadly the Civil war was because of attrition. The battle was significant because it made General Lee leave the North which allowed The Emancipation Proclamation to be addressed by President Lincoln. The battle of Antietam also prevented England and France from joining the war which could have made a very different outcome of the war.

  17. The significance of this battle first indicated the power of the Confederate army. The Union felt they had to watch their back. Due to the strength of both armies, this was not a short battle, which cause a high amount of casualties. This battle was arguably the bloodiest battle of the civil war. To create this battle, General Lee left the North, which allowed President Lincoln to address the Emancipation Proclamation. The war tactics used in this battle was mainly the war of attrition which caused the large amounts of casualties. Finally, the impact of this battle shook homes across the country. The advances in photography brought this war to the home front of everyone in the north or south.

  18. The Battle of Antietam indicated the incredible killing ability of outdated military tactics combined with modern weaponry. Over twenty percent of troops involved from both sides were killed, something that was an unfortunate trend throughout the Civil War. The biggest significance of this battle was that it led to the creation of the Emancipation Proclamation. Antietam gave President Lincoln the victory he needed to present the Proclamation, which in turn gave the Union a more concrete cause to fight for.
